Students who plan to complete the requirements for a graduate specialization in Ethics and Development as part of their master's or doctoral program, should consult the Director of the Ethics and Development Graduate Specialization in the College of Arts & Letters and an affiliated faculty member in their department. The content of some elective courses may vary depending upon the instructor; therefore, only those elective offerings approved by the Director of the Specialization in consultation with affiliated faculty may count toward the Specialization.
Students must complete 9-12 credits from the courses listed below, including PHL 452 and at least one 800- level course.Students are encouraged to complete Philosophy of Science/ Social Science to give students understanding and awareness of theoretical concepts and tools used in the sciences/social sciences. Courses must be taken in at least two departments. Students must also present a final portfolio that includes summaries of relevant fieldwork, study abroad, conference presentations, and coursework including one sample of their philosophical writing on an issue in ethics and development. The student would also need to present a paper/research study for defense to their specialization committee.
Students must also complete a practicum during the study program and it does not necessarily need to take place abroad. Other activities or research studies at local level related to development issues would be considered. This section would be discussed and coordinated with a committee member. The idea of the practicum is to allow philosophy graduates to get outside the classroom, to do some hands in research or other activities. Previous development work in an international setting would not replace this.
Finally, each student must have a specialization committee comprising of three people, two of which would be from the guidance committee and one person outside their home department.
